When is Boston weather the nicest?

The Best of Boston Weather

In the middle of the midwinter doldrums, it seems as if the cold, dark winter days in Boston will never reveal the sun of spring, the heat of summer or the colorful bursts of autumn leaves. But, almost miraculously, each year, February leads to April and Bostonians once again rejoice with the rebirth of spring.

We Bostonians do it every year, after all. But when is Boston weather the nicest? Boston weather in unpredictable and that's part of its charm. What you may think of as "nice" weather depends on what kind of weather suits you. Boston has it all.

Boston's Four Season Weather

Let's start with Spring. This is when the flowers that have been sleeping beneath the snow from December through the middle of March, suddenly begin to spring to life. The world is green again. Bostonians shed their heavy coats and boots for Red Sox jackets, baseball caps and Nikes.

"April, Come She Will" is an old 1970's song that reminds me of Spring in Boston. In Spring, the snow melts away-usually. (It has been known to snow at the beginning of April in some years). After winter's dark days, we rise again with the sun and our days become longer. Bicyclists take the city steets and country roads once again. Gardeners eagerly scoop the soil, gently planting roots in the Spring soil and admiring the perennials that pop up in their front yards. The temperatures rise and the breezes are gentle. It is short sleev and jacket weather, ranging from 50's in late March to the low to high 70's of May and early June.

To see Boston in Spring is to witness a city wake up after the winter slumber. The Red Sox start their annual quest at the beginninng of April and hope rises anew as fans line up to witness the first sharp crack of bat against ball. (If you're very lucky, very rich or both, you'll get to see Opening Day at Fenway). Boston is wonderful in Spring. "April showers (it does rain in Spring) bring May flowers" to cite a weather cliche. This is the beauty of Boston in Spring.

Summer in Boston

"Hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck getting dirty and gritty." The Lovin' Spoonful got it right. Summer in any Northeastern City -and Boston is no exception-is hot and humid. But summer brings out all the fun and energy that Bostonians have stored up during the winter. Backyard BBQ's, beach days, sailboats on the Charles River, hotdogs at Fenway Park, lobsters and clam "chowdah", daytrips to Cape Cod, Maine and New Hampshire-it's all good and it's all Boston in the summer.
