I made my way to the town square that housed the grocer, courthouse, etcetera etcetera, passing Dad's shop on the way. The good thing about the town is, even though it's small, it at least has some entertainment. On the edge of the square was the theater, arcade, and an old-fashion soda shop. I parked my bike at the corner of the square, took off my helmet, and shook the dust out of my black Led Zeppelin T-shirt. As I was raking my fingers through my hair, I looked around the town. I hadn't really been missing anything since I had been gone for the winter. The shops still looked the same and the same old people still sat behind the registers. Except in the soda shop. That's when I saw her. As I turned toward the shop, I spied a face I didn't know. Her short black hair gave her away. Nobody had hair like that. I mean nobody. I slyly checked her out as I pretended to inspect my bike for damage. A Guns N Roses T-shirt. Very nice, I thought. I straightened my hair, checked my pockets for money, and walked into the soda shop.
It had that vintage feel of 1950-something. And she looked sadly out of place. Her hair was spiky and her fingernails were black. But she was white. Damn white too, like a ghost or something. She looked up from the horror novel she was reading as the door jingled and announced me in a kind of way that says 'look what the cat drug in'. I coughed slightly as I looked around. Great. Nobody here but just me and her.
"Slow on business?" I called to her.
She smiled and shrugged. Wow. What an amazing smile.
"Just you," she replied.
I never thought I'd ever admit it, but this voice sang! She was beautiful, in that strange vampire-ish, 'what the hell you lookin' at?' kind of way.
"That your Harley Sportster out there?" she asked in that melodious voice.
Damn, and she knew bikes, too. She seemed perfect. I fumbled for words as I flashed her an awkward smile.
"Yeah, that's mine."
"Nice...So you gonna order something or what?"
I nearly ran to the bar she sat behind just to get a closer look at her. Her name tag said 'Angela'. It didn't seem to fit her at all.
"So, Angela...Just move into town?"
She smiled at me again.
"Yeah. We just moved here from Nebraska actually. Been set up for about a month. Lot warmer down here. What'll you have?"
I looked at the menu even though I knew it forwards and back.
"Uh, what would you suggest?" I asked.
She giggled.
"Nothing. I'm lactose-intolerant," she said as I blushed slightly, "But the banana split is what I'd go with
