Starting a blog is not something which should be rushed. There are various considerations which have to be made and taken in to account if you are to be successful in the blogging process and several of them require to be addressed before so much as switching on the PC.
Step one is to consider the subject of the blog. When considering this, do not just think about what you like and therefore want to write about. You have to consider how capable you are of writing about the subject in an authoritative capacity and to what extent. A blog is an ongoing concern, to which you are required to post on a regular basis if it is to be in any way successful. It is therefore essential that you know that you are capable of writing quality material on your chosen subject and lots of it for the foreseeable future.
It is then time to come up with a URL and title for the blog. The URL is especially important as it can not be changed at a later date. It should be something fairly short but extremely relevant to the content of the blog. The title can be changed at a later date on many blog hosting sites but this is ideally also something you should get right from the start. You want an extremely relevant title but also one which will be eye-catching to anyone ploughing through pages of returned entries by a search engine. Try to make the part of the URL which you determine and the title of your blog the same.
It is now time to switch on the PC and begin the process of finding a hosting site for the blog. You may already know of some but take a look at the many ones on offer and what services they provide. Look at blogs hosted on the sites and determine whether these blogs represent the way which you would like your up and running blog to look.
When you have decided upon the hosting site, join it, pick a template and if permitted, include your Google AdSense ID on the blog. This is an excellent way of monetising your blog right from the start by introducing the possibility of obtaining pay per click revenue.
It is now time to make your first post. Bear in mind that it is extremely important that you post regularly to the blog, so although each post should be extremely relevant to the subject and provide the visitor with some valuable information, you do not wish to exhaust your supply of potential future content by going on at great length. A couple of hundred words each time is often more than sufficient.
Finally, you should look at selling some products on your blog via any companies with whom you happen to be an affiliate. Be restrained in this respect, however, and maintain a balance between the number of postings on your blog and the number of products you advertise for sale. No one wants to visit a blog that simply resembles an online discount store!
You now have your blog up and running and have made a start on optimising it. Remember, however, that this is only a start and if you are to be successful, fresh, regular content is the name of the game.
