I have engaged in the practise of writing for pleasure virtually ever since I was first capable of stringing the most simple words together to form the most basic sentence. I have in that time read a great deal upon the subject and received a great deal of verbal advice from those successful in the craft. There can be no doubt whatsoever that the most common piece of advice I have ever received - and probably the best - is to, "Write what you know." This applies to novels, it obviously applies to technical or tutorial works and I would suggest that it also applies very much to blogs.
If we were to attempt to reduce the concept of blogging to a simple, one sentence description, we would somehow have to include the process of adding regular, fresh, quality content in the form of additional posts. This means that our blog has to be an ongoing concern if it is to be successful. It is not sufficient to create a blog, write a paragraph or two upon our subject - however good and informative - and simply leave the blog for evermore unattended in the hope that it will be successful. We have to nurture it and develop it and provide what will hopefully become a posse of regular visitors with updates and further information.
This is precisely why it is important that we write about what we know and what we know a lot about. If, for example, I were to contemplate starting a blog about, "How to hand knit all your own clothes," I would have a number of serious problems, not the least of which is the fact that I know absolutely nothing about the topic! I could of course do some online research and probably come up with some form of one off article upon the subject but the chances of me being able to post to the blog on a regular basis with quality updated information are, at best, extremely minimal. There is also the factor to consider that the reader would most probably be able to tell that my article was researched, however well it may be crafted, as there would be no "passion" or individuality contained in it to evidence the fact that the writer was both knowledgeable and passionate about his subject.
The subject of our blog is therefore of paramount importance but we also need to be careful in several respects as to how we write about it in order to fashion the best blog we are capable of creating. We have to ensure that our posts are all informative in their own right and stick very much to the subject at hand. We want to give the reader quality information on each occasion but we also have to leave them hungering for more in order to maximise the chances of them making a return visit. Quality, brief, regular posts should therefore be the formula we see to adhere to and build that army of fans which is so necessary to any successful blog.
We also have to be careful to stick to the subject at hand and not to diversify at the risk of frustrating or irritating our readers. If we do wish to blog about a different topic, we should be looking at starting a new blog. It is infinitely preferable to have ten blogs on ten subjects than one blog on which would effectively become a confusing mismatch of same ten subjects. Focus in this respect breeds success.
Writing to our blog bearing in mind the advice contained above will maximise our chances of creating both a successful and a profitable blog which we can see grow and develop for years to come.
