A private ceremony was held
honoring the deceased.
Dying with shaved legs
and clean underwear
she did not die under
the worst possible conditions
as feared by her mother.
Her kids had been tucked
safely in bed
with a kiss on the head,
a breath of their sweet smell,
and being told they were loved.
Her students were left
to go on in life
not too deeply scarred
by her attempt to educate them,
but as successful intelligent citizens.
She left a bit of clutter lying about
and laundry still undone
as well as a bed
that needed to be made,
but she never regretted
the ball games or dance recitals,
romantic movies or dinners,
poetry writing or the book reading
that she did instead.
In the end she did her best
and that was all she wrote.
