Fearing God is so misunderstood. While some may choose to cherry pick biblical passages that list Him as jealous or angry it is better to understand where those descriptions come from. First we must establish who He is. He is our first father and much like those who have either actually experienced or yearned for a truly loving father God is all those things enjoyed or dreamed of....but wait so much more. God is the creator of wonderful creations, and yet he puts us above them all. He knew us first, takes the most joy in us, is full of the most unconditional love. In fact any wonderful parent here with us is only a mere glimpse but amazing example of what God feels and wishes for us. If you come to understand that love then you can understand IN context what the fear of God is and the kind of fear we are to have.
Who of us who have loved deeply have not had pangs of jealousy or anger with ones we have loved so deeply. This does not make God more human but humans more Godly......under the right circumstance of course. Should you be the spouse who has seen the other through a disease, building of a career, raising of children, getting out of debt, standing by and up for only to be left or cheated on understands reasonable jealousy and anger. This is love at it's most unconditional used then discarded....you would be jealous from the loss of a deep love, sacrifice and time with a specific person. You would be angry at the undeserved betrayal. YOU SHOULD BE FEARED by the betrayer! Not a fear of physical confrontation, nor a jealousy that leads to stalking...but the fear of fairness. The fear of what goes around comes around. The fear of when you one day wake up to realize what you have lost and the pain you have caused. You may also fear the anger that will lead to consequences for selfish actions. On earth these may be financial in separation or divorce, the reconfiguration of family and the loss of respect of those with whom you have built the foundation of your entire life on up until then.
With God the fear He speaks of is His turning from you while you put materialism, rejection or the choice of another god before Him....because in doing so you lose your communion or companionship with Him for that time. That is the void that hits you in the silence of everyday without Him, the loneliness that leads to a relationship you would not have normally entered into...but one more night or holiday single....the loneliness that leads to the drinking for the sole purpose
