We all seek the ever-escaping fountain of youth, yet as much as we have tried as a society to find the "secret formula" that will keep us looking and feeling young forever, we continue our search. Through research and modern medicine we have identified foods and chemical substances, which provide our bodies with the opportunities to extend our lives, and improve the quality of this life extension. Let's learn to recognize these foods and start to include them in abundance during our daily living, so that we too may extend the quality and length of our lives. Here is a list of 10 crucial components to achieving the goal of improving quality and quantity of life.
Healthy Greens: Folate and Calcium. These are needed to support bone health, which with aging begins to decline. They will also protect and preserve cognitive decline and age related eye problems. The late comedian George Carlin used to say, " If you want to kill cancer, get yourself a bowl of broccoli". This statement was meant to be funny however as funny as it may have been at the time that it was said it was completely accurate. The heavy use of Broccoli and Cabbage, have been shown to reduce the risk of memory loss and reduce the occurrence of cancer.
Whole Grains: During recent years, the use of whole grains in many foods has shown prevalence in the market place. Being rich in fiber and being able to digest slowly assists the body in maintaining the glycemic index, which enables the body to prevent spikes in blood sugar curbing the incidence of Diabetes.
Berries: These portable snacks contain anti-oxidant compounds known as Anthocyanins that have been shown to slow the growth of cancers, improve our brain function, muscle tone and balance.
Olive Oil: Ever notice the healthy beautiful skin of a person from the Mediterranean, the diet from this region is rich with Olive Oils, which contain the antioxidants that are heavy with benefits of anti-inflammatory properties and also reduce cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Tomatoes: Key ingredient; Lycopene, has been credited with smooth skin texture and is again used heavily in the Mediterranean region. The mainstay diet of this region is filled with many healthy ingredients, which produce the effects that we are seeking.
Nuts: This word had gotten a bad rap when it comes to using it in the same sentence as brain health, but all sorts of these little brown nuggets have been found to reduce inflammation and improve upon brain health.
