When I first went to the Galapagos Islands I wasn't sure what I would find. It turned out to be one of my favorite vacation destinations. The climate is great year-round and the wildlife is amazing at the least.
The tour operators consider two seasons for touring the Galapagos; high season and low season. The low season months are April, May, and September and October. During these months there are many discounted tours in the area. If you are planning your first trip to the Galapagos Islands then I would recommend the low season. There are not as many tourists during this time and it will be easier to become familiar with the area and what it has to offer.
The year sports two basic climate divisions in the Galapagos. You have the "warm season" from December through May; the "dry season" from June until December. Both seasons are excellent for travel.
During the warm season the Galapagos' climate is more like that of a tropical paradise. There is daily rainfall and the skies are more cloudy. The oceans temperature is warmer allowing for more swimming and snorkeling activities. During this season the island birds are more active. From the Frigate, to the Galapagos Mockingbird to the Iguana's the wildlife is abundant.
The Dry Season, known by its blue skies and midday showers sports a lower water temperature but more active wildlife. It is this season when most species of birds are mating.
The "Blue Footed Boobie" has to be one of the funniest shows nature has to offer during mating season. These birds find each other via the males whistle and the females honk. When they get close and start there dance it is just hilarious. It seems that they are very unbalanced as they dance, they mirror each other and point their beaks skyward.
The most amazing though is the Equatorial Penguin. I cannot myself brave the cold to see penguins in their natural habitat. In the Galapagos however it is possible to have them swim up to you in order to satisfy their curiosity.
The Galapagos islands are a protected environment. There is much scientific study and research which has came from the area. Much of the wildlife is indigenous to the area. If you find yourself on the Islands or even the ocean be careful and keep your eyes open. It is possible you could stumble upon the next scientific discovery in the area.
Enjoy what the Islands and the area has to offer. One trip and I am sure you will be hooked. A trip I always look forward to. A place where something is always different and everything is the same.
