Tips for helping your child with homework

Just the mention of the word homework makes some kids and parents cringe. It doesn't have to be a dreaded task. Here are some ways that may help to make getting homework done less stressful for you and your kids.

You should have a specific area in the home that is to be used only for studying and for doing homework. This can be either in the child's room or maybe in an office space. Try to keep away as many of the distractions as possible. If there are toddlers scurrying around the house keep them in a different room during study time if possible.

When it is study time, make a rule that there will be no television watching until they have finished all of their assignments. Have a set period during each day specifically set for homework and studying. Odds are that no homework will get done with the television on.

Although TV might distract kids from their studies, music seems to have the opposite affect on some children. So let them listen to music if they choose to do so, but purchase a set of headphones for them to wear so the music will not disturb others in the house who may be studying also.

Teenagers and even younger kids like to talk on the phone. If you child does have a cell phone of their own, have them to either turn the cell phone off or give the phone to you while they are doing homework. Let them know you will return the phone back to them after they have finished all of their assignments.

Keep a dictionary nearby so that if they come across a certain word or phrase that they do not understand they will be able to look that word up and learn the meaning of it.

Set up a few breaks throughout study time and let them stretch their legs, take a breather, and unwind their mind a minute. Have a little snack waiting for them to eat during their break.

Make sure that the study area has plenty of good lighting where they can see all of their materials. Be sure the chairs are comfortable and the desk or table is at a good height for them.

The purpose of homework is a way for teachers to give students a better understanding about what they are studying in the classroom. Homework also provides a great way to review what all has been covered in the classroom on that day and will show the teacher any problems that a student may be having with a certain subject. It's also a great tool in teaching the students on how to search for information on subjects. If your child needs help with an assignment take the time to sit down with them and try to help, but don't help
