A blog - or web log, to give it its formal title - is not something which we simply create and then walk away from in the vain hope that it will turn the Web on its head and earn us pocketfuls of money. If it is to be even moderately successful, a blog should be viewed as a commitment. We are essentially making the commitment to update our blog regularly and to include content which those who may become our loyal readers are going to want to read and perhaps learn from. This is something which it is imperative we understand from the outset and believe we are capable of maintaining in the long term.
Making a blog successful is an ongoing, frequently lengthy procedure. In the first instance, we have to choose the right hosting platform for our blog, we have to determine an appropriate and effective URL and title for it. We have to include Google AdSense in the hope of generating pay per click revenue and, ideally, also feature some products for sale from companies which we are affiliates for or even those which we produce ourselves.
When we have got these basics in place, we have to ensure that we are adding fresh, quality and original content on an extremely regular basis. Postings to a blog should not be lengthy, overly informative affairs. They should be short, quirky and moderately informative, giving the visitor something but encouraging them to come back at a later date for more. It can take a bit of practise and time just to get this procedure alone down to pat.
We may wish to consider featuring guest bloggers on our blogs to freshen up the perspective from time to time. Invite another blogger whom you admire and who writes to a similar subject as you to post on your blog. Perhaps you can return the favour. This will give freshness in style as well as content, and as long as they are clearly labelled as a guest posting on a one off basis, may please your reader with their thoughts on your subject.
In order for a blog to be successful, we have to let the world know that it exists. We have to link to it wherever we can around the Web. This may be on our other blogs or websites, on bookmarking sites, on social networking sites, or even by joining forums on the subject of our blog and becoming respected on same for the quality and value we add to the debates of the day.
If you have not been put off by the insight above in to how to run a successful blog, I wish you every success in your venture and hope to stumble across your work on the Web some day.
