What About Tomorrow?
Carpe Diem! Seize the day! That Latin phrase really says it all. Horace had it right, wouldn't you agree? I doubt Horace lost much sleep wondering, "What about tomorrow?", he was a busy fellow.
"Time flies when we're having fun." Another good one to remember. Really, when we're busy, we don't have the time nor the inclination to worry about tomorrow, do we?
Worry is useless. What has worrying about anything ever done for us but create stress?
Think about this:
Tomorrow is always out there somewhere, isn't it? Just beyond our reach. The carrot dangling right above our noses. The age old proclamations; "Tomorrow, "I will go on the diet", "quit smoking", "start exercising", "say I love you more", "write that book", and so on. All the things we will do tomorrow already exhaust us, don't they? I mean, don't you get tired just thinking about all the things you are going to do tomorrow? So exhausted in fact, that today, you simply kick back, relax, and say to yourself, "I will worry about it tomorrow." And "today" suffers. Poor "today" is taken for granted.
As time passes faster with each day, month, and year, we stay stuck in the conundrum of how to change the past, cheat the moment, and steal the future. None of which is productive. We can't change the past. It's gone. Cheating the moment is really cheating yourself out of good times you might otherwise enjoy. And stealing the future, really? How does one presume to do such a thing? The future isn't here yet, and by it's very virtue, never will be.
All we really have is this moment. Our lives are held together by the moments lived now. The roses we stopped to smell and appreciate, the rainbows we admired after a storm, are the treasures of a lifetime. And it's in those moments free from concern regarding how we did yesterday or how we will fare tomorrow, that we find true freedom, and hence, reveal our true selves. We do not exist in any time except right now. Of the three, the past and the future exist only in our minds. Right now is the only time we can truly experience.
Life is about the little choices we make everyday. The little things mean everything. However, if we are living in the past, or worried about what tomorrow will bring, we miss the opportunity to make some of those little choices. We miss the moment.
So, tomorrow when you wake up, live like there is no tomorrow. Appreciate all that is in front of you at this moment. Be grateful for all you have and you will find many more tomorrows ahead of you.
