With college basketball season heating up Bob Knight has been all over ESPN ever since he was hired as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. Bob Knight has made no secret that he would be interested in coaching again for at least three or four more years. Bob Knight probably would like to pad his record as the all time most winningest coach of all time. Bob Knight probably misses the chance to have a horse in the race so to speak instead of just watching the games as a college basketball analyst.
Bob Knight was able to get the job as head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Pat Knight has been struggling as head coach of the Texas Texas Red Raiders so Bob may be too consumed with straightening out Pat's situation given that Pat has gotten thrown out of a game or two this year for arguing with the officials. Thus Bob Knight may be too worried about Pat Knight keeping his job to actually get back into coaching himself.
As a couple of jobs have become available within the SEC with the firing of Dennis Felton at Georgia Bob Knight's name has come up as a possible full time replacement for Dennis Felton. The SEC is big enough of a conference to handle the personality and the media attention that comes with having Bob Knight as a coach. The question is whether Knight believes he can win at a place like the University of Georgia with the Bulldogs. Bob Knight's name has not come up for the University of Alabama job where I tend to believe that he could have equal to if not great success than at the University of Georgia.
There is no doubt in my mind either that Bob Knight has the desire and the basketball acumen to lead a team deep into the NCAA Tournament. The question with Bob Knight for me is whether or not he is able to recruit the stars necessary to win in today's game. Bob Knight doesn't care for the three point shot a whole lot and he doesn't like to get out and run in the fast break as many of today's other top coachess. Knight's motion offense almost isn't flashy enough to get you on SportsCenter or even lead you to the NBA very often so a lot of young, talented players decide not to play for Bob Knight.
One thing is true though the University of Georgia basketball program was involved in an academic scandal under then coach Jim Harrick. Dennis Felton did an excellent job of cleaning these kind of scandals up. Bob Knight would most definitely follow Felton's lead. Trust me if you survive Bob Knight's demanding style as a coach most of those players will come out being excellent citizens in society one day.
