The cold reality of being attacked by someone with a knife is that most of the time, there is absolutely nothing you can do. Most martial artist and even some people without any formal training know some sort of maneuver for disarming a knife, but in most circumstances is better to surrender what ever the attacker wants rather then risk the knife. Does anyone really want to risk pain or death for a piece of leather with a few bucks in it?
One thing that can be done to reduce the risk of being injured is to simply not keep all your eggs in one basket. What this means is, rather then keep all your identification, credit cards, and cash in one wallet in a back pocket, carry these items in separate places. Credit cards or drivers licences easily fit in specially designed lanyards. Rather then carry all your cash on you only carry small amounts, or if you have to carry a lot simply do not place it all in one place. Tucking extra money in a sock, shoe, or even just another pocket make your belonging more secure. These tips mean that if you are forced to give up a wallet or purse to an armed attacker, rather then losing your whole world you aren't losing much, and you have a better chance of escaping the situation unharmed.
Obviously in todays world, not everything is so simple. Often times knife attackers are nervous, high, and/or desperate. Sometimes, giving them what they want won't be enough, or they may have the intention of actually assaulting you. Weather it be sexual or otherwise, it is important to know how to respond to these situations. The best way is to join a self defense or Martial arts class. But if we all had time and money for these things, articles like this one wouldn't really be necessary. So how do you decide when and how to act? There are a few signs to look for, keep in mind that some of these may be intended for armed attackers in general and no one can ever guarantee you anything when a blade is drawn.
One very important detail in determining the nature of your attack is to try and remain calm. Obviously your attacker will try to use fear and the element of surprise to scare you into submission, but if you let them succeed then you'll never be able to accurately read the situation. By staying calm you are able to hear and see what is going on around you much more clearly. Listen to your attackers words. What is he asking for, are is words slurred or does he appear calm , like he's done this a thousand times before? Chances are if he is calm
