Poetry: Childhood

The Clouds Popped

The spirit of life that resides in our children,

can certainly be felt, but can it be written?

To paint a picture with words-

of words that have never been heard,

the many stories that long to be told,

stories never spoken but can be felt in the souls

of those who are in the midst of a child,

of those who spend some time, even just a little while.

The children, they can't explain it, they don't understand

why they can't talk, or why they're afraid of the sand,

or why they need you, where they came from,

or why they need to suck their thumb,

why strangers stare at them, why they aren't allowed to eat dirt,

or why they must go to the doctor, those needles really hurt.

What are their thoughts seeing the ocean for the first time?

Or when tasting their first lemon, or first lime?

Overcoming great fear to touch their first worm

is such a milestone, so many things they have to learn.

Can you describe their expression of wonder

the first time they felt the rain and heard thunder?

The sheer enjoyment of a child who has finally learned to crawl,

or when you put them on your shoulders, oh to feel so tall!

First steps, first sounds, sights and fears,

so many thoughts and emotions, so many tears.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,

to stop and smell the roses is to stop and watch a toddler,

to praise them and see their glow, to teach them and watch them try,

to hear them laugh without being tickled, to watch them try to reach the sky.

These children constantly need an adult by their side,

don't push them away, join them, go along for the ride.

Spend some time and attempt to understand

the feeling of trust when they reach for your hand.

Ultimate satisfaction, this feeling, this essence of life

being passed from a child to an adult, let it in without a fight.

Look into their heart, and yours now too, so you can see

a simply amazing place, where all souls desire to be.

Curiosity, happiness, anticipation, wonderment, innocent and pure,

it all resides in their simple being, they just can't explain with words.

Someday they will understand and talk a little bit;

"It's foggy outside" I told him one morning real quick.

"I know mom, the clouds popped!" he said like I should have known.

Finally to hear such thoughts, forever in my heart they're sewn.
