When a diamond isn't forever: What to do with a wedding ring after a divorce

Ideally marriage should be for a lifetime. However, there are times when a marriage will end in divorce. Couples are left with their wedding rings after the marriage ends in divorce. I call this the wedding ring blues. Whether the divorce ends in a friendly manner or a knockdown drag out fight, there is still the issue of the wedding rings. What do you do with your wedding rings when the marriage ends in divorce?

Wedding Rings Are A Gentle Reminder

Some women and men choose to keep their wedding rings for a gentle reminder of the marriage. These couples typically have a marriage that ends in a divorce that is friendly. Perhaps one of them doesn't even want the marriage to end. Keeping the wedding rings is a gentle reminder of lost love, old friendship and perhaps hope for in a relationship.

Get Money From Melted Down Wedding Rings

Another option for the wedding ring blues is to melt down the wedding rings. You will need to take the jewelry to a reputable jewelry store that does jewelry melting. The first step of the process will be to have the stones removed. After the stones are taken out, the jeweler will then use a special process to melt down the metal from the wedding rings. Instead of having the wedding ring blues you can now pocket the money from the melted down jewelry.

Make New Jewelry from Wedding Rings

One solution for the wedding ring blues is to make the jewelry from the wedding rings. You can have the stones removed and the metal melted down to create a completely new piece of jewelry. You can make a charm for charm bracelet or perhaps even a pendant for a necklace. This jewelry can then be worn for other occasions.

Another reason to make the jewelry out of wedding rings is to pass the jewelry onto your children. This is a good way to keep jewelry within the family without having to wear something or keep something that is a reminder of your divorce. New jewelry can symbolize a new journey or path for your life.

Sell Old Wedding Rings at Pawn Shops

If you just want to make some money from the wedding ring blues you can take your wedding rings to a pawn shop and sell them. You might not get much money but at least you're done with the rings. Many people that have a divorce which ends unpleasantly select the option simply to sell their wedding rings at a pawn shop.

Donate Wedding Rings to Charity

Yet another option for the wedding ring blues is to donate your wedding rings to a charity. This is a good way to let others have a beautiful wedding by purchasing or receiving your old wedding rings for very little money or for free. While the wedding rings hold bad memories for you they can be a new beginning for a couple they cannot afford to purchase wedding rings and a traditional manner.
