Creative writing is a definite form of mental therapy. It is a safe and healthy escape mechanism that allows the one thing that we all need to put our lives back on track after a particularly stress filled day-control. When we choose to write, the whole real world disappears for awhile. It doesn't matter what issues you have dealt with all day. It doesn't matter what rude or hurtful things were said to you, about you or by you. Finances do not matter for the moments you are gone in your writing. You are gone to a place of your complete and utter control. For the brief time spent in your writing, you are in charge making all decisions.
The characters, the setting, the plot, the imagery, everything is at your fingertips. None of it happens without you. Someone that has thoroughly annoyed you can become a dispensable character meeting trying obstacles that only you can take away or intensify. Someone that came to your rescue can become a heroic character that you pay back with worshipful deeds or life changing happenstance. You can enter yourself into a character and finally control every aspect of your life even creating the outcomes you hope for in your real life someday. No matter what things you choose to have happen, none of them are legal or illegal, right or wrong. They simply are because you said so.
The setting can become a place that you can sink into and forget the real setting of your life until you are mentally strong enough to deal with it again. The imagery you create may be the ideal place for your mind to heal. It may also be the perfect place for your readers' minds to heal. Most of us are lucky enough to have a certain author that provides our escape route in times of stress, sorrow or fatigue. Especially authors that have created a place about which several stories are written become our saving grace. We know that place. We long for that place. It is a comfort. We as readers go there to be with people we know and trust. We as writers can create a place that we know and trust and a place for our readers to go.
It is a double plus when we can take care of ourselves and the people that read what we have created. The beauty of the whole thing is that the type of creative writing does not matter. No matter what genre we choose, it is one we will find comfort with and one that someone out there will pick up to read. It doesn't matter is we are creating a short story, working on the next great novel or creating a place in poetry. As long as it is within our comfort zone and control, it will heal our minds as we write and the minds of those that choose to read with us.
