There are many reasons for making the decision to give up a child for adoption. It is never an easy decision. In some cases, it is a teenager who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, but has no way to care for the child. Other women have been victims of rape, and have no desire to raise the child of their abuser. Other women are adults, who, like the teenage girl, find themselves unexpectedly pregnant. Perhaps they could financially handle the responsibilities of parenthood, but have no desire to do so. Rather than abort the child, they opt to have the child adopted. Still others are women who live in poorer nations, and cannot feed the children they already have, let alone the little one on the way.

In all of these scenarios, there are one of two circumstances under which the child is being born into:

#1 - the mother cannot care for the child. Be it physically, emotionally, mentally, monetarily or otherwise, the child will not be well cared for by the biological mother.

#2 - the child is simply unwanted. And since she is unwanted, she will likely not be well cared for either, should she stay with her birth mother.

The best option for all of these children is to be adopted, because even though these babies may not be wanted by their mother, it doesn't mean they won't be wanted and loved and cherished by someone.

These mothers shouldn't be labeled as selfish, because any woman who carries a child for nine months, no matter what their reason for adoption is, knows that giving that child up to another mother is not an easy thing to do. It takes a level of self sacrifice and a giving spirit, knowing that you are giving that child to someone else so that the child will be well cared for; so that the child will have a chance at a great life.

This decision can also be viewed as giving on the part of the biological mother because she is able to give a child to a family who wants one. There are so many couples who long to be parents, but can't on their own. They have tried and tried and have come to the conclusion that adoption is their only option. And generally, these families have so much love to give. The women who bravely choose to give up their child are humble enough to admit that they can't properly care for the child, and are willing to give, sacrificially, to another family.

Its the gift of life these women are giving; the most precious gift of all.
