If you've never heard of a mooncup before, but are looking for the latest in environmentally friendly feminine hygiene wear, then read on.
WHAT IS IT?
It's a resuable silicon cup, about the same size and shape as an egg cup (without the base). It's worn internally like a tampon, but collects the blood rather than absorbing it.
Just like a tampon it requires removing every 4 to 8 hours, at which point it is emptied (down the toilet usually), cleaned and reinserted, rather than simply thrown away.
WHY USE IT?
* It is environmentally friendly. It not only does away with the need for tampons, but also pads as well.
* It is better for your body. It contains no bleaches, there are no fibres, it does not interfere with your usual vagainal secretions and does not cause Toxic Shock Syndrome. It does not cause thrush or irritate eczema, and unless you happen to be allergic to silicon, it's basically allergy free.
* It is easy to use, once you've had a bit of practise. (It helps to fully read the instructions both on-line and those contained in your pack after purchase.) Women who have born children vaginally will probably find it easier to use than those who haven't because their vagina has already been stretched.
* It is cleaner than using tampons and pads and therefore you get less odour.
* For those of us who have already had children and worry about swimming when "on" - the mooncup is ideal. It fits like a dream and there are no leakages at all when exercising or swimming.
* You can wear it overnight without risk of leaks.
HOW DO YOU USE IT?
Before use the mooncup must be sterlised. Simply boil it in a pan of water or use a sterilizing solution. While you are having your period it need only be wiped or rinsed between uses. Once your period is over, it then needs a thorough clean, and resterilising before use again.
The cup seems quite large when you recieve it. But don't worry! It does fit! It comes in two sizes. Size B for women under 30 who have never given birth and size A for women who have given birth or who are over 30.
To insert it you can either fold it in half, or coil it up. You should squat or crouch to insert it rather than stand upright, and aim for the small of your back. It takes a little practise, but with time it becomes easier. Some people use alubricant to help them initially.
The cup should sit just inside the entrance to the vagina (thereore much lower than a tampon). It has a stem attached to the base to aid removal. This needs to be trimmed so that it comfortable
