A web writer can provide text for websites, offer promotional copywriting, ebook authoring, article writing for business blogs, and for marketing purposes. It is also possible to get paid for reviewing, blogging and forum posting.

You can have a full time job working as a web writer by finding freelance writing jobs, or by setting up an article writing business.

If you want to earn a living as a web writer you need to be motivated to write every day, and not allow yourself to be distracted from your work. You need to be adaptable, responsive, accurate, and able to meet deadlines.

You must be able to follow guidelines, and be prepared to do some rewriting when requested.

You can start working as a web writer by joining a writing community, and building up a good portfolio of articles. It is most important to understand and accept that you have to stick to guidelines, when they are provided, and not always to write in the way that pleases you. You must be able to adapt your writing style to suit the tone and format required by the guidelines you are given.

To be a successful web writer, you need to know how to promote yourself. Freelancing is a competitive field and writers have to bid for projects to work on, or pitch their work to publishers.

A freelance writer has to build up a good portfolio of work to show to prospective clients, and to gain a reputation for being productive, efficient, reliable and honest.

You must be prepared for rejection, or lack of response, when submitting work or prospecting for a writing job. Never think of this as a personal failure. Simply accept that your work may not exactly match what that client is looking for. Accept constructive criticism when it is offered, and don't believe your writing is so perfect it can never be improved.

A web writer is self employed and it is important to be well organized. Records of all your writing jobs and accounts of your earnings must be kept up to date. You may need to supply invoices to some of your clients, and there will be time when you have to chase up outstanding fees owed to you.

To be realistic, it takes time to build up a career as a web writer, and it could be up to two years before you start earning enough to live on, so you may need another source of income, or sufficient savings to see you through the time when income is low.
