Today or tomorrow: What's more important?

by Lacey Nix

Created on: February 13, 2009   Last Updated: June 29, 2009

My to do list is always on my mind. .I start my morning with the essentials, cleaning, shopping and getting the kids together for the day. And then inevitably the things that end up at the end of my list are the ones that are closest to my heart. I put off living my dreams for another day. Instead of doing one thing a day to follow my own personal dreams, I do laundry or get an oil change.

I have realized that if tomorrow never comes all I will have to say for myself is, she did a lot of things that in the end never matter. That is not how I want to be remembered. I want to be remembered as the woman who lived for today, the woman that never put off for tomorrow what she could do today.

I know now that the easiest way to live in the now is to start immediately following your dreams, no matter how silly or far fetched they are. If you don't follow your dreams then tomorrow you might not have the chance. What is your true dream? What is it you have been putting off? For me looking at my past gave me all the answers I needed for my future.

If you want to know what your true dream is you have to consider all the dreams you've had in your life. My life goal is highly conditional upon what age you asked me at. When I was a child I wanted to be an actress so people would pay attention to me and see me. In High School I wanted to go to Harvard, so people would see me as intelligent. None of these dreams made me happy, I choose them to make other people happy.

When I started college I promised myself I would major in something I loved to do. I now have a degree in jouranlism. But what did I do with that degree? I let life get in the way. Seven years later I ask myself, why am I not the person I know I can be? The answer is simple, I did not live for today. I put off everything for tomorrow. And if tomorrow never came, I would be a sad soul.

I once heard, "Dreams are only wishes until you do something to make them come true." That theory has stuck with me. So I vow, from this moment on to start living my dream, day by day. I vow to do one thing a day to contribute to seeing my dream become a reality. I will no longer put off for tomorrow, what I can do today. Becasue we are never promised tomorrow. When will you start? When will you decide that your future is in your hands?

If you are like me you are thinking, "Dreams only come true for people in fairytales or movies." That's simply not true.

Need proof? My dream is coming true as you read this article.
