Guide to Everglades National Park, Florida

we took a tour through the Everglades National Park we went to the Gator Park deep into the Everglades! At Gator Park we saw all sorts of wildlife such as alligators, turtles, snakes, fish and exotic birds. There we had the opportunity to learn a lot about the unique wetlands and its native inhabitants, but we left the alligator wrestling and other events to other sport-minded folk. For information on the activities of the Gator Park (http://www.gatorpark.com/full _site/) Phone number (305) 559-2255.

We were fortunate to learn that best time to see alligators in Everglades National Park is during the dry winter season, our choice of the season to visit Florida. When we had the opportunity to visit the park we were told by rangers of the Park they could be seen lounging along the Anhinga Trail. There we saw the

gators' of all sizes from ten-inch youngsters to ten-foot adults get together nearer the deeper water holes.

After settling in our lodgings we laced up our hiking boots and with the assistance of the ranger-guided tours we had an excellent three-day tour of the Everglades National Park. We took guided two-hour Shark Valley Tram Tours along a fifteen-mile loop in the heart of the "River of Grass", which departed from the Shark Valley Visitor Center; it provided us a great opportunity to see wildlife. We took one of the Everglades National Park Boat tours where we skimmed the waters and enjoyed with interest the fauna and flora along swampland. Off course we went on one of the variety of land trails where there was opportunity for a leisurely stroll through the variety of plant life.

NOTES:

1) Alligators are critical to the survival of the Everglades National Park. Without the gator holes many animals of the swampland would not make it through the dry winter season. The alligators with feet and snout clear out muck and other vegetation from the holes in the limestone rock on the floor of the glades; thus these holes become oases during the dry season. Then a large number of fish, turtles and mammals take refuge, together with their alligator's hosts.

2) The Everglades National Park is administered by the National Park Service of the Department of Interior with visitors centers near the park - Earnest Coe Visitor Center,
