Short stories: Unrequited love

replied.

The disappointment that crossed his face left a smirk on his expression that turned to a frown, and he found himself awash in mixed emotions. He could not tell her what he was thinking at that second, but he didn't have to. The sound coming from the speakers stacked upon each other drowned out all hope of conversation, and when he glanced away speechless she was suddenly gone.

Stepping out of the mist of the bar and into the mist of the country road, he found himself walking through his mind as he walked his way toward home. His house half a heartbeat away, he soon found himself at his door fumbling for his keys. For the life of him he could not easily slip the key into the lock, but eventually his fingers found their place in the darkness and with a twist of the knob he pushed his way in.

"Leave the front light on," he whispered to himself with frustration.

Placing one foot in front of the other with each step, he brought himself up the stairway into his bedroom and fell into sleep on his bed. As his eyes closed, the wind through the curtains covered him like a warm blanket of moonlight that turned to daybreak, and as soon as he fell asleep he came awake.

What was it he dreamed?

Staring down at his wrinkled work clothes, he quickly reached his hand out to turn off the alarm on the clock before it sounded through his aching head. One foot left the bed to find the floor as his spinning eyes focused on the television he must have turned on during the night, and he sat himself on the edge of the bed. The scent of the coffee drifted through his nose from across the room.

Floating into the room inside a silk robe she came.

"Hello, baby," he said softly, too weak to really speak.

"Good morning, husband," said Kim. "How are you feeling?"

"I had the strangest dream," his words recounted. "I met you in a bar and walked home."

"Just like when we first met?" she reminded.

Smiling and nodding his head, "Just like when we first met."
