Decades ago the pomegranate was a fruit only mentioned in the Bible and you would have been hard pressed to find them on the fruit stands of the local supermarket.

But since then studies have revealed the amazing health benefit of the pomegranate. This tangy fruit has gained acceptance for its antioxidant qualities that help in the fight against heart disease, cancer, stroke and high blood pressure. Besides its antioxidant power, it's also offers anti-viral properties to help against the viruses that cause colds and the flu.

It's effective in promoting prostate and breast cancer health. In one study by Stewart and Lynda Resnick Trust, men with prostate cancer increased the time it took for the PSA (prostate specific antigen), a marker of cancer, to double simply by drinking 8 ounce glass of the juice every day. PSA doubled after 37 months as opposed to the 15 months it took for those who did not drink the juice.

It helps prevent the deterioration of bone cartilage. According to a study done by Case Western Reserve University, the extract proved to be effective in blocking Interleukin-1B, an enzyme that contributes to osteoarthritis.

Evidence shows that drinking pomegranate juice during pregnancy can help to reduce brain injuries in infants especially for those born before 34 weeks into pregnancy. The pomegranate's high concentration of polyphenols have been shown to have anti-aging and brain protective effects. As it also contains estrogen, it is particularly useful in alleviating menopausal symptoms and prevent bone loss for women. The seed oil from pomegranates can help reduce skin cancer tumors.

Drinking concentrated pomegranate juice reduces LDL cholesterol levels and improves the lipid profiles in diabetic patients with
hyperlipidemia. You can help lower your high blood pressure by drinking pomegranate juice.

Pomegranates contain three times more antioxidant power as is found in green tea and red wine. They are a rich source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber and niacin. The juice is the most widely taken though you can find it as an extract, a concentrate or in dry capsules. However, you must be cautious on buying juice as most store varieties come loaded with sugar and calories that negate any healthful effects. The natural fruit is the best way to gain the most benefit. Read the labels on the juice you buy. If sugar is listed among the top three ingredients, you'd be better off buying your juice at a health food store. POM Wonderful is one exception to store bought juice and is a good source of vitamins.

When it comes to buying pomegranates, look for a firm unbroken skin and a deep red texture. The fruit should be heavy for its size and the crown free of mold. As they are picked ripe, they are ready to eat. Each fruit gives 3/4 cup of seeds and 1/2 cup of juice. Cutting them open can be difficult due to the tough skin and since they stain clothes, it's best to wear an apron when cutting them. You can use pomegranates to make pound cake, turn them into jelly and syrups or as a sauce and stuffing for chicken and turkey. They make a great chutney. Use pomegranates to make your own wine or a vinegar dressing.

So the next time you visit the local grocery, pick up a few organic pomegranates instead of apples, find a few good Middle East recipes and provide your family with the tasteful health benefits of this lesser known fruit.
