Scene: Living Room with a well-trimmed Christmas tree, brightly-lit. Many presents sitting underneath. The tree is in front of a window, which has the curtain open. It is snowing outside. RACHEL is sitting on a couch facing the tree. Her husband, ANDREW walks over towards her to sit down alongside.
ANDREW: Ow!
Rachel: What?
ANDREW: (sitting down) The snow's making my arthritic hip hurt.
RACHEL: You're ruining the mood.
ANDREW: Sorry. (cuddles up closer to her) Other than me being in pain, nice to have snow for Christmas,
RACHEL: Yea. (they sit quietly for a moment)
ANDREW: Wish the kids were a little older. We could get them to shovel it. I guess that won't be too much longer for Roberta , now that she's housebroken.
RACHEL: That is not the right phrase. Housebroken is what you do to a dog. She is potty-trained.
ANDREW: Well whatever.
RACHEL: And we are not having our three year old shovel snow for us.
ANDREW: (shrugs) Just an idea.
RACHEL: Yea, a bad one. (smiles) First Christmas since we got back together.
ANDREW: Yup.
RACHEL: Most people we ever had here for Christmas. Never had more than three before. It used to be you, me and Elizabeth, then for a couple years, it was just Elizabeth, Roberta and me. Now suddenly we're a party of five. You're back and you've got Andy with you.
ANDREW: More people to love.
RACHEL: (pause) I hope you got me a nice gift.
ANDREW Oh yea. And appropriate for our married status.
RACHEL: What does that mean?
ANDREW: You'll find out tomorrow.
RACHEL: It better not be inappropriate to open in front of the children.
ANDREW: Oh no. I'd never do anything like that.
RACHEL: Yes you would.
ANDREW: (pause) You know maybe we should have Andy open everyone's presents. He loves tearing things up.
RACHEL: I know.
ANDREW: Very destructive child.
RACHEL: Yea, but every kid wants to open their own presents.
ANDREW: Well, he can open mine anyway. If I actually got any.
RACHEL: Yes, you have presents. Don't whine.
ANDREW: (getting up) I guess we should go to bed before Santa Claus gets here. You know he won't come in the house if anyone's awake. And if he doesn't come, they'll be three disappointed kids tomorrow morning.
RACHEL: Fine. Maybe I should leave out some cookies.
ANDREW: No, he seems more like a regular guy. Maybe leave a beer out.
RACHEL: I'm not leaving alcohol around with small children in the house.
ANDREW: Oh, he should be here before they wake up.
