I actually enjoyed 30 Days of Night greatly. At first I watched it thinking it would be just another vampire movie, but it really was very entertaining.
I enjoyed some of the usual vampiric myths they kept, and some of the smaller differences. I liked how ruthless these vampires were, it intrigued me. There was nothing to them but blood lust and hunting instincts. Usually, any vampire in a movie ends up having a little bit more of a human edge to them. They use other emotions and reactions, other needs besides that of blood and feeding. These vampires seemed to me to be all about the hunt. Yes, they were malicious and clever about how they caught food, but there was nothing sexy about them. Usually in this day and age vampires are looked at from a sex-addict's point of view, or a romantic's point of view. There were not romantic notions about this vampires. They were there to kill, feed and move on. Just as simple as that.
Normally, I think books do better than the movies they get made into. Even a graphic novel has more to it than the movie it becomes. But I think this movie carried over very well. I even thought the actors looked fairly close to the characters, at least from my view. Rarely do actors match a character's looks in a graphic novel, or the descriptions in a regular novel. The transition seemed to be smoother for this story.
I have noticed that in this day and age that blood and gore are the main goal of a lot of horror movies, and while there was the usual obscene amount of blood in this movie just like any other, I actually did not mind. I have begun cutting down what horror movies I will watch if it looks like all there will be to them is blood. This movie came with enough suspense to counteract such use of the red-stuff. The gore managed to be balanced with a story, rare for horror movies in this day and age.
I would reccomend this movie to any of you true, hard-core, vampire horror movie lovers. It will keep you entertained and it will give you plenty to talk about for the days to come. It certainly sent me and a few of my friends into debates about vampiric myth, which is the best part. If you have friends who are just as into such things, then this movie is a great one to watch at night with all of them and lots of popcorn and candy. There is nothing quite like a sugar-high group of horror movie lovers, it can be very interesting, and intense.
Most definitely a good movie.
