How to save money on clothes for your family

Living expenses include more than the monthly bills, groceries, household items and transportation cost. There is one cost that most people over look when planning their financial budgets for their household. This is the expense of clothing; without proper planning and price comparisons this cost can get rather overwhelming. There are ways to save money on clothes for your family that don't take a lot of time.

Hand-me-downs

In homes with children older children's clothing can be passed on to younger children. While a few adjustments may have to be made to the appearance of the clothes as the styles change this is a fairly easy way to save money on clothing. As older children out grow items the younger children can have them; if you have two the same age they can share. They can even borrow some of your clothes if they need to go somewhere that requires them to dress more grown up and you have something that'll fit them.

Trade Clothing

You can check with family and friends to see if they have clothes they no longer wear. You might have something in your closet they want and vice versa. Trading clothing items can save you money by eliminating the amount of clothing purchases made. Simply make sure that you have sizes those you are attempting to trade with can use.

Clearance Racks

Clothing that is season specific or that the stores have an over stock of are often put on clearance sale to make room for more clothing in the store. Often items on the clearance rack can be gotten for as little as five dollars sometimes even a dollar. Imagine the savings on clothing for you and your family over a year, especially if you have a large family. The clearance rack is a good place to find clothes for the kids to wear around the house during the summer.

Thrift Shops and Dollar Stores

Checking these stores can help to reduce the cost of clothing a great deal. When you have a baby in the home you'll find that they aren't very rough on clothes as far as rips and tears but stains often happen. You can find a great deal of baby clothing at these stores either new or like new at next to nothing prices. Clothing for adults and older children can be gotten also depending on your needs.

Sales

Waiting for sales on clothing at the beginning and end of the school year can save you up to 75% off the regular price of clothing. Watching the prices of clothes and sales cycles during the year can save you money on clothes for your family if you can't manage to buy all the items you need at once.

Proper Care

Reading the directions on the tags of clothing can go a long way toward saving money on clothes for your family. Washing clothes in cold water will help prevent fading; hand washing delicate items will prevent rips. Not replacing clothes because of these factors will help to save money on clothing as well.

Work, School, Daily Use

Designating the use of your clothes will save you money as well. You wouldn't want to wear clothes with grease on them to the office so why wear your office clothes to work in the garden. Kids shouldn't wear their play clothes to school or their school clothes to play in the yard unless you want them to go to school with grass stains and such.

These are just a few things that can help you to save money on clothes for your family. Just because your kids want name brands doesn't mean that they or you need them. So watch the prices, check the clearance racks and take care of your clothes to save money.
