Characteristics of the ferret

Ferrets are a popular choice with pet owners. They are very clean and can be trained to use a litter box.

They get their name from a Latin word meaning thief, and rightly so. If you are ever near a ferret, you will want to keep your belongings secure. They love to steal and stash items.

Ferrets are not rodents. They belong to the weasel family. People link them to rodents because of their small and furry bodies. The first step to a wonderful relationship with your ferret, is to learn about their characteristics.

Characteristics of the Ferret

Body:

Ferret fur is usually different shades of brown and black. At birth, the kits are white. In rare cases, the ferret does not change color. These ferrets are albinos. The albino ferret will have pink eyes.

Their fur is sleek and shiny and their bodies are long and slinky. They can access the smallest of holes. If you have a rodent problem in your home, buy a ferret and you won't be bothered by mice for long.

Hygiene:

Ferrets are mistakenly thought to give off bad odors. This is not a true fact. They have an oil gland, (which can be safely removed by your vet) which can give off a slight smell. If the pet ferret does smell, clean his litter box regularly. Usually bad odors arise from negligent care by the owner.

Diet:

Ferrets need a diet high in protein. They will require a ratio of 35% protein to 15% fat. You can feed your ferret cat food, but not for an extended period of time. They are carnivorous, so meats are essential to the health of this mammal.

Habits:

Ferrets, like cats, will spend most of their time sleeping. They can sleep for up to 18 hours a day. They are very intelligent and learn fast. It will take a little patience, but you will be able to train this wonderful pet to do some tricks.

When you can catch them awake, they will keep you amused for hours with their antics. They are quick and prefer to be inside holes and bags and dark places. A favorite hiding spot is up their owner's sleeve or in a pocket.

Ferrets only grow to be around 3 to 4 pounds. While being noted as superior hunters, they seldom kill their prey. They just love to ferret out and leave the rest to the humans. They have been used as rodent and reptile control for centuries.

Ferrets are often misunderstood and compared to rats. This is not true. They are smart, friendly and clean. Having a ferret for a pet will give you years of enjoyment.
