A couple of years ago, Lynn Viehl finished writing science fiction and went back to her roots: Romance. But, it was romance with a twist. The Darkyn, who used to be human, became vampires many centuries ago during the time of the Crusades. When they came back from the wars, they died and rose again. Sometimes infecting family members and sometimes finding their families dead from the disease. The Darkyn called it a curse.
In this story, Robin of Locksley or Robin Hood has been a thief for seven hundred years, stealing fine paintings and other works of arts. His focus is a beautiful illuminated book that belonged to Maid Marian. However, Chris Renshaw, an undercover federal agent, is guarding the book. Of course the book is bait to catch Robin. But, the better bait is Chris, a beautiful young healthy woman.
The federal agents believe that the international art thief is an older man in his sixties or seventies. So when Robin captures Chris, it is very hard for her to believe that she is caught in a world of vampires. She is extremely upset when she first sees the long eye-teeth of the vampire. And, at first thinks they are plastic.
Also, there is a group of men trying to kill the vampires and are called the Brethren. These men take a secondary role in the book. However you see the aftermath of the Darkyn war with the Brethren as Alexandra, the only Darkyn surgeon, tends to the wounded, who are dying around her.
The main role of antagonist is Countessa Borgiana. She wants the book because in the spine is Beatrice's tears. Apparently, these tears were the main cause of the Black Plague. Although Beatrice was innocent, she was burned by the Darkyn. They could not allow her to survive because of how leathal her tears were. Any Darkyn who touches the tears dies quickly. Countessa captures Robin's people and sets Robin's cousin, Nottingham, against Robin. Not hard to do because of their history.
Another string in this story is Alexandra, the turned Darkyn and surgeon, that is looking for a way to cure the vampiric virus. And she finds it in Beatrice's tears. I should mention that Alexandra wanted to cure herself. But, she also loves a Darkyn lord. So there is some conflict in her heart.
I have read the last six books in this series and I am very impressed with "Stay the Night." Not because of the major story line of Robin and Chris, but because it has layered several storylines that makes this book a rich read. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is into paranormal romance or even Lynn Viehl.
