Songs: One red rose

by Christine Hutson

Created on: February 12, 2009

Moonlight in a graveyard
Pain within my chest
One red rose within my hand
Tears fall upon my breast

Memories of love long ago
Hand in hand
We ran barefoot in snow
"One day we'll tell our grandchildren
What I did in the war"
"Suppose they ask
What were you fighting for?"

Arguments and dreams
Candles in the streets,
Peace symbols and protest
Viet Nam a nightmare
Soldiers tried and soldiers died
And civilians sang the Requiem
Fillled with pride

Others attacked paraplegics in uniform
"Baby killers"
Among other insults
Stuff it, shove it where the sun don't shine
Businessman and wealthy men
Set a price in blood
Honor tried and honor died

One red rose
Petals painted with my blood
Is the only sign left of love
That didn't die in Saigon ,
Wasn't cut up by the blades
And didn't shatter on the rocks
So one red rose
Until we meet again
