Sleeping in a tent to some people would be considered roughing it. I imagine it would be due in part to their upbringing and how much they are attached to their trinkets of technology and modernized conveniences. These people should purchase an RV and stick to the hard surface roads.
I for one, am of the mindset that sleeping inside a tent is too close to a real structure like a house or cabin. Sleeping out under the stars is a great way to spend some "relaxation" time. If you are in a tent, you are missing the point of camping out!
Building a fire and cooking what you can catch is also a huge part of the experience. Fishing is my favorite thing to do as far as preparing for dinner. Hunting can be a great way to "bring back the bacon" if there is something to hunt in your camping area. A good back up plan is to take a can of beans. Then you have a nice side dish for your catch/kill. I think it's legit to take camping dishes.
As far as cell phones go - well maybe keep it in the car for emergencies. But the place I camp at - there is no service! I just make sure someone knows where I am going before hand so they know to look for me if I dont come back on a specific day.
In my mind this is camping. "Roughing it" is a term folks use who just don't understand the benefits and enjoyment of it.
