She stood and watched his stony figure submerge into itself. Yet, in a strange twist of rage she could not empathise with the General's awkward pain, and found herself simmering with frustration. The hot words finally flew like vented steam from her lips -
"And that is all that I am. A queen."
Isen's body shuddered as he resurfaced from the jungle of knotted hair. In his eyes, a fascinating transformation occurred. The anguish, barely hidden by a heavy scowl, evolved. What she had expected, the familiar gaze of quiet regality, astonishingly remained hidden.
Instead, a strange yet perfect array of severity and rapture swam across his eyes. And suddenly, she flew back fourteen years to the moment their inner worlds almost touched in the little field by the dray.
Inside of him, the flame burned again. Finally, she was his object.
Another wave lapped across those piercing grey orbs as the wonder evolved to an impassioned tenderness. It was a look which she had never seen before. It transfixed her and accelerated the soulful churnings that now vibrated with every ringing thump of her heart. She barely breathed. So absorbed by his gaze, and oblivious to his steady movement out of the darkness and toward her frozen figure.
All of the yearning for his closeness, banked up over thousands of hours in the bleak and distant throne room, now might be assuaged in one perfect moment.
Inches apart, she drew her hand up over his face and gently brushed his chiselled and scarred skin. Fascinated, the queen could not withdraw. Her slender finger traced the haggard stubble along his jawbone, to the centre of his chin, before finally resting on his warm lips.
How long they stood before she finally withdrew, neither could estimate.
But what she understood and welcomed was his bandaged hand grasping hers, drawing it back to his lips.
She welcomed the soft kiss. The powerful hand smoothing across the side of her waist and resting comfortably in the small of her back.
She melted inexorably into his heaving chest. Their faces gravitated together again, lips millimetres apart in the heavy air. Isen drew in further, and then hesitated, staring into her hopeful eyes.
Lips brushed. Wait no more. Earth and soul suddenly became one. A world thought lost spilled into that cold space. It was smooth, impassioned and relentless. They rarely breathed, lost in the bliss of a unity to which both had been long denied.
And in the end, as if he had not answered enough, a smooth whisper. A scrabble of words that shed years of unwanted majesty and left her as Nimehuae, in her simple, womanly bones;
"You are everything...to me."
