If you plan to bring a ferret in to your home the first thing you need to consider is housing. Ferrets spend most of the day sleeping but when they are awake they are extremely active which means they need a good sized home. It has been said that the minimum size of a cage housing a single ferret should be 36 x 18 x 36 inches (with two levels), anything bigger than that is perfect. A cage with bars is the best option as it allows for good air circulation (and is good for the ferret to climb on).
If you decide to house your ferret indoors then you might be interested in getting yourself a secure run or a pen to put in the garden, after all every ferret is entitled to fresh air to roam around in.
Three essentials for your ferret home is a water bottle/bowl, food bowl and litter tray (be sure to affix all to cage). Ferrets are carnivores and should be fed a meaty dry mix, available online or at all good pet stores. Treats can be given to aid training. Ferret litter is also available online and at all good pet stores.
As the ferret spends a lot of time sleeping and a lot of time playing they need good sleeping quaters and a good selection of toys. You should make bedding from wood shavings and rags. Ferrets love hammocks and they are easy and cheap to make, just use an old piece of material. Tubes and balls are also a big hit.
A carrier is useful to take the ferret to the vets or to keep him in one place whilst you clean out his cage.
If you want to take real pride in your ferret there are specialised shampoos, brushes, nail clippers and even deodorant, vitamins and toothbrushes available! Ferrets do tend to give off strong odours so it is advisable to invest in grooming products and cleaning products. Flea and tick treatments are also advisable, particularly if you are housing more than one or give them access to the outdoors, you can get these from any vets or good pet store.
Some people also enjoy taking their ferrets out for a walk! In which case you would need a lead/harness specially designed for ferrets which are available online or at all good pet stores. Of course with every good walk should come a good outfit and much alike dogs, there are also clothing for ferrets! The best way to search for ferret clothing is through the Internet, which has a wide range.
Your ferret should be given a collar with a nametag with all of your contact details on, so he can be returned safety if he wonders off alone into the great outdoors.
