Guided Imagery is an excellent way to relax. The state of relaxation benefits the body by reducing the stress responses most of us live under. The stress response puts strain on all parts of our bodies as well as creating emotional distress. The practice of guided imagery is a no cost, easy way to create the state of relaxation and can be used almost anywhere (not driving or where you must be alert).
The how of practicing can be as simple as telling yourself a story or as complicated as a formulated directions. Each of us will find a type of guided imagery that works best for them. Different types of imagery may work best at different times. Practice and trying different forms will help each person arrive at what works for them.
What types of guided imagery are there?
A formula guided imagery uses a systematic relaxation process. You are seated or laying comfortably, after several deep breaths you visualize your toes. You think about your toes relaxing, then your feet. You progress up your entire body relaxing each part until you again take several deep breaths and allow the calm to claim you. You can add positive statements at this time to reinforce the positive effects. The arousal process should be slow allowing your senses to return to the present.
Music guided imagery uses a calming gentle music to allow your body to relax. You begin again by relaxing in a sitting or laying position with several deep breaths, then you allow your mind to focus on the music. You may find colors or images that flow through your mind as you allow the music to guide you into that quiet place. As you begin to return to the present again you can add positive thoughts to help lift your positive feelings. Use a gradual return.
The story guided imagery is a fun way to relax. You can purchase pre-recorded guides, get free pod cast of guided imagery or you can record your own. This type of guided imagery tells you a calming story that you follow along to relax. You again start in a sitting or laying position of easy and take several deep breaths. The story can also add positive images and thoughts for you to carry with you. You're then guided back to the present encouraged to carry that relaxed feeling with you. This type of guided imagery can be very personal as you create a story to help you meet your needs.
