Important update: As of Aprl, 2010, the ehow Writers Compensation Program (WCP) has been cancelled. That means that writers can no longer get income for articles submitted directly to the ehow site. Instead, writers who wish to earn money for ehow articles must submit them through Demand Studios.
This is a huge change for ehow writers. First off, Demand Studios is not open to everyone. Writers who weren't invited to join Demand Studios based on their ehow portfolios will need to apply to Demand Studios with a resume and links to their work. Second off, Demand Studios uses different templates, has different (more stringent) guidelines than ehow did, and requires that articles be approved by an editor before being accepted.
My original article is below, but the information no longer applies, given the drastic changes to the ehow's writing program, as described above.

The eHow site contains user-written how-to guides. It's a good place to share your knowledge and earn some money at the same time.
Some of the eHow articles are written by writers at Demand Studios. To become a Demand Studios writer, you have to formally apply, with a resume and writing samples. Most of the eHow articles, though are written by eHow users themselves. There are no hoops to jump through to become an eHow user. You simply sign up.
First, you need to create an account. Go to the site's homepage at ehow.com, and you will see a link near the top saying "Join." Fill out the short application form, follow the instructions, and you will be registered.
Next, become familiar with the way people write on the site. Spend time browsing and reading on topics you find interesting. Pay particular attention to the "Top How To" and the "Featured How Tos" on the front page, because those have been selected by the site's editors.
Now you should be ready to try writing your first how-to. Sign into your account, and click on "Write." You will see three tabs leading to pages with information on how to write great articles, drive more traffic, and generate buzz. Click on the tabs and read the information. Then click on "start writing."
eHow uses a special template. Most of it is self-explanatory, but there is a help guide on the right side of the page, in case you have any problems. The most important thing to keep in mind, while you write, is that you want to break your instructions down into clear steps.
