Constitutional Love
Rosa Jacobs lay awake in her bed. The winter sun was just rising on a cloudless sky. As the heat started to melt away the frost, Rosa turned over and starred at her sleeping husband. She looked at him in wander. Amazed they had made it through the last 3 months. Amazed they had actually reached this day in their relationship.
Saturday 14th February 2009, the day Rosa would realise her love for her husband was rekindled. Through all the trials and tribulations, the marriage was still alive. It was stronger than it had ever been. Rosa was in awe of the love she felt toward this human being, the man who had played his part in ruining her career while, indirectly, saving their marriage.
Rosa reminisced over the last 10 years. Remembering the times when she and her husband had kept secrets; the times when it felt like their lives were being lived separately but together; those years when Rosa thought that her job had satisfied her, that working was keeping her marriage alive. However, as she lay there on Valentines Day listening to Steve's heart beat, contemplating it for a second, she knew that her old career had been a slow but deadly poison to the relationship.
Steve Jacobs had been chief of the US Department of Treasury for 6 years, he had worked for the treasury for 10 years prior to this. He had met Rosa at an official event and instantly fell in love with her. He knew she was working in finance, he knew she was successful and he knew the company was above board. She was his perfect companion. Steve had never probed anymore on Rosa's career; Rosa had never offered any more information either. This suited them, neither of them brought their stresses back to the household, neither of them compromised their important positions within their fields. For 15 years and 6 months it had suited the Jacobs, they were in love, they were successful, and they were good for each other. However, everything had changed in October. It could have been a disaster for their relationship. However, it had not. It saved them.
As Rosa lay in her bad that morning, her mind drifted. Drifted back to the day in October when she realised that her husband had signed the document that effectively made her redundant. Being the chief of the Treasury, Steve would have had the final say on this law change. She knew he had effectively got her the sack, although she knew he hadnt done it knowingly. Steve didnt know what her role in the company really entailed.
She remembered the anger
