The AAWCS provides scholarships for freshmen women enrolled in the Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) at the university. Nineteen undergraduate women (not limited to African-American women) are selected for the scholarship every year. Each recipient receives $2,000 to $5,000 per semester. The amount to be determined is based on the financial needs of the student. Two letters of recommendation are required to apply for the scholarship.
What makes this program unique is that it offers more than financial incentives. Students are supported and encouraged to complete their four-year courses and earn their baccalaureate degree. The CIS department also helps the students focus on chosen career paths. Other forms of support from the CIS includes the following:
- Resumes and interviewing skills.
- Peer mentoring.
- Teaching students to build a strong sense of identity.
- Arranging campus visits at graduate schools.
- Finding job opportunities after graduation.
