Poetry: Homeless

by Kim Babcock

Created on: February 10, 2009

As i gratefully ascend to 34th & 7th Ave.

Crisp aire fills my lungs and i'm suddenly glad.

There's a skip to my step, though discreetly disguised,

From the frenzy of Penn, cross of 38th Street and Mad.

"Welcome back thou Salubrious Amiable Dawn,

Reflect from patina edifices of my noble NY beat.

Scale the pinnacles of steel and glass citadels

And smile upon swarming, metropolis city streets."

The warm sun on my face purely strengthens delight,

So, i quicken my pace to accelerate the spread.

A whimper, a sneeze, the rasping abraded coughs,

Cause me to fall nearly backward at the spectacle ahead.

There aren't enough dimes for this peripatetic crew,

As they line all the walkways with their denigrate glares.

Then suffer a quiver of guilt ooze down my spine

Which spoils this grand mood, fraught with discerning despair.

Though i know i can't change this state of misfortune,

i'll share my sad rhymes and satirical restraint

With the yellow-tailed droplets of God's bounteous bulb

To ease the raw burning of my helpless constraint.
