A spiritual awakening is one of the most beautiful, albeit challenging facets of the human experience. We're all given free will to believe or seek as we see fit, but how many of us actually exercise this gift to it's fullest potential? As children, the majority of us are raised in whatever faith our family holds dear. We also learn early on that if we dare to ask questions that aren't synonymous with what we've been "trained" to believe, episodes of severe disappointment along with rigorous reconditioning regimens are likely to follow.
When more and more you desire answers to things that are in popular opinion "unknowable", you are on your way to having a spiritual awakening. When you yearn to know Who, What, Why, When, Where God is, you are fostering a spiritual awakening. When you decide that there's got to be MORE to your personal relationship with God than Sunday service, bible study, choir practice and tithes; When you really step off the beaten path to explore on your own...you are leading your spiritual awakening.
And... it's OKAY! It is, in fact, very natural. It's kind of akin to knowing your way home. "Knowing my way home?" you say... "What's that got to do with the price of beans in Bethlehem?" you ask. It's like this: There is no place like home. It's where you feel the most safe, comfortable, loved. It's the place where you can let your hair down and 'let it all hang out', if you will. What if, the only way you could get to your sanctuary was if other people gave you directions on how to get there? What if so-and-so isn't available to direct you turn by turn until you arrive in your drive? Old What's-her-name is busy and can't be bothered , either. So what do you do? Do you just sit on the curb with a perplexed look on your face? Or do you get up and make an effort to find it on your own? That way, when you find yourself all alone on the same curb tomorrow , you won't need anyone to tell you what you already know.
It can happen to you anytime , anywhere. It could be triggered suddenly by a tremendous, life altering event. Or it could simply creep up on you slowly and quietly as the years begin closing in and you start becoming painfully aware of your own mortality. In many cases however, few things will more commonly bring you to scrutinize yourself under your own internal microscope better than being involved in a romantic relationship. You begin to ask yourself questions you never asked yourself before. You spend more time than is probably healthy
