Resources to help with an online job search

Using the Internet to find a job can seem difficult when you first sit down to start the task. It's really not difficult at all. There are many job listings on line, waiting for you to find them.

First and most importantly, you want to stay away from those "work at home" scheme sites, the get rich quick sites, and many of the sites that promise to pay you to be a "secret shopper". The secret shoppers require you to spend money at different stores, then report how you were treated by the employees, the store condition etc. Many times, the amount of money they require that you spend, will be more than what you will get paid to do the secret shop.

A good place to start, is your local newspaper's website. They may list classified ads on line, which will include available jobs in your area. In my local newspaper's website, I find a link for "Jobs". When I click on that link, it takes me to Yahoo's Job Finder. A search engine, that I can use to look for local jobs, as well as out of the area jobs, if I want to consider relocating.

I start by entering the job that I am looking for, then enter the state and city where I want to look. I can also check a box to include surrounding city's to expand my search. I'll put in that I am looking for a manager position, in my area, and see what comes up.

Well known companies, such as Family Dollar, T Mobile, Rite Aide, AT&T, Finish Line, are some of the job listings that came up. A total of 16 job listings were found. As I scrolled farther down, I came across some of those "work at home" listings. A couple were to take surveys at home, two of them were to test video games at home, and one was for someone to "take pictures". I don't think they are looking for a professional photographer, and, the are offering $250.00 a day, with no experience, and to work from home. Sounds like another scheme site to me, so I would avoid those.

Another great site to look for employment on is a site called Monster.com. When I input the same search information as I did on my local newspaper site, I find 194 job listings in my area! A huge difference than what the newspaper site had to offer. As I look at the listings, I notice that they are in order of distance from me. This is a very nice feature, as you can decide if a job is too far away for you to travel or not. I am seeing a lot of well known companies, such as Toys R Us, Pet Smart, Hollywood Video, Petco, and even the US Navy. Eight pages total to choose from. With the Monster site, you can
