I can understand the fascination with designer watches up to a point. I used to have a Dior watch that I eventually sold on ebay because I needed money during college but it was hardly as expensive as some of these watches you see today plastered all over every single fashion magazine's pages.
No, I do not believe that the price tags attached to watches are justified. These watches are nothing but a status symbol for the rich. They represent what the "have nots" cannot have, and therefore are tailor-made and marketed to those who want to show off their riches and put everyone else in line by showing you that they can afford something that you can't. It's all about ego, power, and control. It's all about class division, and making a distinction between "them" and "us."
Now, I know everyone likes to feel a little fabulous now and then, and I can't blame anyone, this is human nature. We all get a little puffed up and prideful at times, hey, who hasn't been a little vain now and then? I won't throw the first stone in this regard, but again, there is a line to be crossed where one becomes human or somehow just a vainglorious and empty, shallow and boastful individual.
These watches, by the way, proclaim such individuality with a loud shout! I remember once, when I was in a room surrounded with lawyers, I noticed what pompous and ridiculous people they appeared to be. I'm very good at figuring people out, and I could just sense that they though they were better than everybody else in the same room, even each other.
Which brings me to a good point. How much is enough? When vainglorious people can be "better" than the average Joe, which I find cruel and condescending, they will go on to fight amongst themselves. Ever seen a beauty pageant full of spiteful women all competing for the same title? What about ballerinas? I've heard some horror stories about pieces of glasses put in pointe shoes and all that.
It's no different with the rich and corrupt. When they are done destroying our middle class, they go on to compete against eachother. Makes you wonder what types of "human beings" these are, and makes you wonder if the price tag on a stupid watch is worth it.
Hey, but to them it's normal.
To them, being the kind of the dung hill is more important than being a kind and compassionate human being. If I were to access these people, I bet they'd all be mostly narcissistic to a very high degree because such people don't see anything wrong with themselves or have a need to self-reflect.
In effect, these watches are marketed to people who care nothing about substance, and only style.
