and other vision ailments often begins with the underlying disease, adding pain medication, and topical creams to help the eye. Antibiotics can be administered orally or topically, depending on the source of the infection. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious, and all household cats should be examined and treated. Aftercare involves continuing to give medication and applying creams. Keeping the eyes clean is also important.

Surgery is used to remove Cataracts, relieve the pressure in the affected eye, and repair corneal injuries. Aftercare may include giving antibiotics to avoid infection, changing bandages, and keeping the eyes clean.

In the case of excessive weeping, veterinarians use a nasolacrimal probe to flush blockages in the tear ducts. Aftercare involves monitoring the eyes for recurrence of the condition and giving antibiotic treatment, if the underlying cause was recurring infections of the tear ducts.

Preventing Cat Eye Ailments

Hereditary or age-related feline eye problems cannot be prevented. However, those caused by underlying disease or injury are preventable. Recommendations include:

* Regular doctor visits and vaccinations to eliminate risk of FHV, FIP, and other diseases.
* Routine examination of eyes, teeth, and coat to ensure health changes are found and treated early.
