have five conceptions but three were lost due to miscarriages. They would eventually divorce in 1980 but remained very close throughout Hunter's life.
Hunter continued to write for The National Observer submitting stories from Glen Allen, California. He eventually relocated to Berkley, California where he was immersed in the underground culture of drugs and hippies during the 1964 social movement. He began writing for the Berkley called The Spider.
Hunter began writing a novel about the rebel motorcycle gang Hell's Angels. The book is a record of Hunter is traveling with the Angels where he purchased a motorcycle and ran with the group. Eventually he was ousted from the group due to a beating at a local bar where he began fearing for his life due to the publication of his novel The Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, which was published in 1966. Hunter was instrumental in introducing the gang to such literary figures as Ken Kesey where he Introduced Hunter and the Angels to acid during a party at his compound in California.
In 1970, Hunter would run for sheriff of Aspen, Colorado running under a slogan as Freak Power. Hunter's stance was that to rid Aspen of the yuppies and industry folks that were moving into town. He called for the legalization of marijuana and the destroying of paved roads within the city. Hunter believed that he would win if all the people that were on the throngs of society would vote. He would eventually lose due to his awkward stance.
Hunter would eventually continue to write but his influence and style began to be seen in the article The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved, where it was published in Scalan's Monthly. His style became known as Gonzo journalism, where the reporter's experience would be interjected to the story leaving a first person subjectivity of the story leaving traditional journalism methods behind. Thompson would continue to write in this style throughout his career leaving his influences on the journalism world.
Hunter's next book would be titled Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This novel would occur when Hunter was writing an article for Sports Illustrated on the Mint 400, a motorcycle race, which had him on assignment in Las Vegas. Hunter and his attorney, Oscar Acosta Zeta, traveled throughout Vegas creating mayhem by consuming countless amounts of drugs and causing countless amounts of destruction.
