Poetry: Sisters

by Carol Wise

Created on: February 10, 2009

I met my sister today
we don't share genes
we share experiences
not that we have lived
the same life, because
we have not.

I met my sister today
she doesn't share my
father nor my mother
yet I knew she was
my sister, I knew
who she was immediately.

I met my sister today
I have met several sisters
throughout my life. Which
is strange because I was
an only child, alone.

I met my sister today

she looks nothing
Like me. Our height, weight
and coloring are all very
different.

I met my sister today
we never shared dolls
or tea parties as we grew
up, we never went out
on family outings.

I met my sister today
we have a bond deeper
then blood sisters have,
it reaches into our very
souls.

I met my sister today
no words of explanation
were necessary between,
no apologies, no excuses,
just knowing is enough.

I met my sister today
she knew me to my heart
as I knew hers, the tears
we cried were shared,
no words necessary

I met my sister today
we are no longer young
naive or alone, for we
have aged, survived and
discovered there are others.

I met my sister today
she is awesome, loving
and giving, open to risk.
She makes me want to
be more like her.

I met my sister today
I looked into her and
saw how far I had withdrawn
from life, forgotten to risk
and reach out.

I met my sister today
she asked me to be
her mother, perhaps because
I am old enough to be
I have children older and younger.

I met my sister today
she calls me "mom"
though I feel ill prepared,
I lost my mother and
lacked role models of quality.

I met my sister today
she knows the questions
that haunt my soul, she
searches for similar answers
within her own.

I met my sister today
In some ways she is
like I once was, reminding
me, that I still have
much to offer.

I met my sister today
she reminded me that
we have many sisters
and brothers as well,
who are struggling.

I met my sister today
she inspires me and
gives me the most
powerful of life's weapons,
Hope!

I met my sister today
and I know that our
bond is deep, inspiring
and hope filled.

I met my sister today
she may call me "mom",
an honor for me to be sure,
Still I know, I have met my
sister today.
