- BASSETTS LIQUORICE ALLSORTS -
Bassetts Allsorts have been around since 1899 and Bertie Bassett is the famous jolly mascot made up from a selection of the different liquorice shapes. On his feet he has the round sweet with candy bobbles on with a soft jelly liquorice centre. His legs are made up from the black tube liquorice with the white fondant filling. His body comes in the form of a triple decker sandwich of liquorice and candy and to complete the picture he has liquorice canes in both hands. This little
sweet man has brought an old fashioned charm and a sense of fun to the Bassetts Allsorts.
What I like about this selection, is the variety of colours and flavours. It makes the selection varied and fun. With bright pinks and yellows and blues you really are spoilt for choice with the Allsorts. The shapes of the 'Allsorts' are colourful, fun and the tastes are quite different from sweet to sweet. The candy and liquorice make a great taste combination and they are all really are delicious. I think my least favourite is the round bobbly one with the liquorice jelly centre. There is something about that liquorice jelly that I just don't like. But apart from that, a great selection of Allsorts that are colourful and filling.-
How Allsorts originated, was, a confectionary salesman, Charlie Thompson, tripped and fell, spilling his samples all over the shop counter. All the 'weird and wonderful' sweets mixed together in a mass of colours and thus, inadvertently were created, the 'Allsorts collection'.
-THE PRODUCT- The Bassetts Allsorts are contained in a new and very eye catching black packet. The bright and abstract design to the front uses the colours of the candies; with bright pink, blue, yellow and orange in the shape of a modern heart. The Bassetts name is lettered in white, and then encased in a red metallic bubble with the trademark Bertie Bassett picture alongside the established date of 1899. 'Luscious Liquorice' is picked out in blue and the packet is bright and colourful, and the sweets are terrific value at just over 1.00 apx.-
-THE INGREDIENTS-
Firstly, Bassetts Allsorts contain wheat and sulphates and may also contain traces of milk.
Also: - Sugar - Treacle - Wheat flour - Glucose syrup - Desiccated coconut - Caramel - Cornflower - Modified maize starch - Liquorice extract -
-COLOURINGS-
Paprika extract - Curcumin - Cochineal - This product also contains: Gelatine of the bovine variety, so the Allsorts will not be suitable for vegans or vegetarians. - The packet which I have bought is the 215g size, which says to check your GDA (Guideline daily amounts), and these are to the reverse of the packet.-
-SUMMARY-
On the discovery that this product contains bovine gelatin and the crimson colouring, cochineal, which is derived from the cochineal beetle; I can honestly say I won't be buying Bassetts Allsorts again; or anything else for that matter, which uses bovine gelatin or the colouring of cochineal. The method of extraction of the cochineal colouring is barbaric to say the least, and quite disgusting.
In the worst case scenario a severe reaction to the cochineal colouring includes: Anaphylactic shock, and to a lesser degree, hyperactivity in children. "Cochineal is one of the colours that the Hyperactive Children's Support Group recommends be eliminated from the diet of hyperactive children".
By law all foods containing this colouring must be labelled as such.
Also the product contains gelatin of the bovine variety, again there is serious dispute about the safety of this product in relation to BSE, as it is derived from the collagen of cattle.-
