The most important part of the interview is to sell yourself! Most people forget that they become the product during the interview. Kind of like a commercial. What makes me want to buy you as the product for my company?
Most interviewers know within the first 2 minutes if they want to continue the interview or not, so while first impression (appearance) is important, what comes out of your mouth can determine the length of your interview. Be prepared to stand out and be noticed.
Basic Don'ts:
Don't insult the interviewer by telling them the obvious like your name - as it's already on your resume.
Don't go into detail about your personal life and issues - we all have problems, they don't need to hear yours, too.
Don't use the same old "I'm hard working, honest, and dependable..." speech, almost everyone uses it, and it's tiring.
Don't down-talk your last job, boss or co-workers. It can be perceived that you're hard to get along with.
Don't wear perfume, cologne, or smoke before the interview. The interviewer may have allergies to your sent.
Don't fidget! Stay calm and cool.
Basic Do's:
Do have a 10-15 second commercial about YOU and why you are the best candidate for the position. For this, think of TV and the commercials you see. What makes you purchase McDonald's over Burger King? This is your time to shine - it's your commercial. Once you write it, practice it! Know it! Become what you say you are.
Do know about the company prior to your interview. Do your homework and research.
Do focus on the interviewer. Eye contact is important for the interviewer.
Do dress like a professional from head to toe (Don't over dress or under dress).
Do bring a copy of your resume inclusive of your accomplishments and credentials.
Do pay attention to body language and facial expressions. Practicing in front of a mirror or a friend can help you be interview ready.
Do speak in the positive about self. If asked "What's something negative you should work to improve on?" Turn it into a positive answer. Never show your weak side.
Do have fun! It's the perfect time to show your personality and how you handle new situations.
Do ask for the job. It lets the employer know how serious you are about working.
Remember: If you are a person that gets nervous (many are) and are likely to have sweaty hands, a simple trick is to sit with your palms placed on your lap and when you stand to shake hands, firmly press against your slacks or skirt to remove sweat.
GOOD LUCK!
