Social Security systems that provide care and support our disabled and elderly in the United States. I agree with the president when he says, "We are failing." But I disagree with his proposed tax cuts to pay for private health care instead of proposing a National Health Care plan so that all Americans are guaranteed medical coverage. Indeed, we are failing and will continue to fail in our care of the sick, the old, and the poor among us until we take a good, hard look at our national values and decide to make ending the suffering of our citizens as well as other nations, a top priority in this country.
On the death and suffering in Africa, I was glad to hear him speak about the AIDS health crisis and his commitment to maintaining funding for AIDS in Africa along with a proposed increase of 1.2 billon dollars over the next 5 years to fight malaria in over 15 African countries. I would like to have seen him increase funding for the AIDS crisis, but was grateful to hear him speak about the need for medicines in Africa at all. But he paid only token mention to the slaughter and suffering that continues to plague the people of Sudan's Darfur region, by placing Darfur last in a long list of nations, and saying only that "we need to educate the consciousness of the people" to saving those in Darfur. That's all he had to say about the genocide in Darfur. Federal Agents would then begin to be able to focus their attentions more directly on issues of border security and terrorist prevention. I liked what President Bush had to say in theory, although I disagreed with his belief that amnesty should be taken off the table for those who have lived in this country for an extended time or who have immediate family here in the U.S.
About global climate change a.k.a. "global warming," the president said that as part of ending our dependency on foreign oil, we should develop new technologies for electricity like solar, wind, clean coal and "clean, safe nuclear energy." He also suggested reducing gasoline consumption
