It is time for new leadership in Washington, and it is my greatest hope that the newly elected Democrat majority in Congress along with a growing number of Republicans who are dissatisfied with the fiasco that has become the Iraq war will be able to guide the necessary changes needed in our foreign and domestic policies.
President Bush began his speech graciously with kind words and warm wishes to our new Speaker of the House, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who now holds her place in history as the first woman to hold that office.
Congratulating the Democrats on their new congressional majority, President Bush outlined the goals of his administration as: "prosperity, wise spending, solving problems, guarding against all Evil," and "keeping faith with those who were sent forward to defend us." He then called for Democrats and Republicans to work together to solve the difficulties of our country by being willing to "cross the aisle" politically to work together towards achieving common goals to benefit all Americans.
I agree that Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservative of both parties need to work together to solve the problems of the Iraq war and the crisis that struck New Orleans and the Gulf Region during Hurricane Katrina back in August of 2005. In last year's State of the Union address, President Bush said he would not forget the people of the Gulf and that he would remain committed to rebuilding the region and helping the people who lost so much. I don't recall him mentioning Hurricane Katrina or the continuing rebuilding effort during his entire speech. If he did, I must have blinked. There are still people living in trailers, poor or non-existent services and people who are displaced and homeless.
His proposal to balance the federal budget within 5 years without raising taxes is a bad joke on the American public. After giving large tax cuts to primarily the wealthiest citizens and turning our budget surplus into a budget deficit of staggering proportions, we should believe in his fiscal fairy-dust as he plans to escalate the number of troops in Iraq? Apparently, the money for this war and all of the veteran's support services that will be needed is going to magically appear somehow. I somehow highly doubt that God or leprechauns are going to dump unlimited amounts of gold into the war chest for him to continue his personal farce in Iraq.
Regarding our healthcare system in the United States, President Bush spoke about rescuing the Medicare/Medicaid and
