I've been playing B&W2 for 2 months now... And I'm conflicted.
In the original, you played out as a God who could manipulate/move matter and people within your area of influence, and you earned a creature. The creature being to focus of the game, you educate him and largely form his behaviour patterns as he helps you expand your influence. A giant personality test. Are you Good, or are you Evil?
B&W2 is not too different. They disabled skirmish (random single-player) mode, and have stuck soley to a story line. You save some Greeks from their homeland when it is invaded by the Aztecs, and it's up to you to re-build their civilization and get even with the Aztecs.
This is a lot of fun. But you feel offended when you complete a world, and have to leave your master-piece city/empire behind. But all around, it is one of the most enjoyable games I've played to date.
I highly recommend B&W, B&W: Creature Isle (your creature gets a creature!), and B&W 2..... in that order.
