Software reviews: Wordpress

After using many different blogging platforms, including Joomla, typepad and moveable type, I think wordpress allows for both the user friendly easy to use interface (especially with new version 2.7) while still allowing themes, plugins, and customizations. Creating a new post or page is incredibly simple, and quick. It even has a 'quick post' feature to quickly post informaiton. I think wordpress 2.7 has everything anyone will need, for every type of user. General blogger, who just wants to post their life story, Graphics poeple and theme designers have an easy time, they don't really need to know any programming, they can do just about anything they need by knowing HTML and CSS. Programmers and Developers have a well supported API to do just about anything you can think of. The plugins and hooks available are simple and allow you to add many different features. The community for wordpress is what I like the most. If your looking for a theme to use, google it, or search on wordpress.org, and you'll probably find what your looking for. This works for anything, themes, plugins, even help on how to edit or modify a plugin. With thousands of plugins available, its real easy to get your blog to do everything you need, without knowing how to program.

Wordpress is lightweight and has a simple data structure, everything it does is handled within about a dozen database tables, which makes learning how wordpress works is very simple. There are classes and methods for everything you need. Working as a developer with wordpress I have often started writing a function to do a particular task only to realize that I hadnt searched for it anywhere, and that I could be wasting time. So after searching for a minute or two, I usually find a wordpress function to do exactly what I want. With the API you can even override functionality to change the behavior of wordpress.

Since it has a pretty large community, it makes finding other developers easier than some 'home grown' type blog/CMS solution. There are alot of poeple familiar with it, and since it is well documented, if you needed something specific you could hire a programmer, and they could pick it up if they had not already used it before.

Lastly, even if yo uuse wordpress for a while, and decide to leave, it has an export feature so you can export your posts easily and take them somewhere else.

Oh yea, did I mention its free? Even the wordpress.com hosted solution (though some features there are limited) its free. Thats tough to beat.
