We don't have any control over the circumstances that we are born in to. In the case of the health history of our families, this means that we likely have inherited something or other from either side of the family, be it something serious or a minor nuisance. The trick is educating ourselves and knowing what exactly we are at risk for.
Knowing your family health history is a crucial part of taking care of your own health. It is also important to know if you have children. Being armed with this information can help you to make wise decisions regarding your health, and the health of your offspring.
Try to find out your health history by talking to the people in your family. Find out what health problems your mother, father, grandmother, and grandfather have had during the course of their lives. Do they have diabetes, heart problems, or have they had cancer? Make note of any health problems, and don't forget to educate your children about these issues when they are the proper age.
Dig a little deeper and find out what your aunts and uncles have had problems with. This can help to paint a larger picture of what overall health issues have taken place within your family line. Try to find out what people passed from at least a few generations back. If the people in your family don't remember, you may be able to find out from genealogical records, many of which can be accessed on the internet.
Make sure that once you have a good picture of your family health history, you use it to your advantage. Talk to your doctor about the things that you have found. Talk to him about any concerns that you have. Use the information to better your overall health. If we are armed with the information from our family health history, we can try to prevent those things that have been passed on to us. We can use this information to talk to our medical providers so that they know what they need to keep an eye out for.
Family health history can only do so much for us. You may be well aware of what runs in your family and you may do all you can to prevent these things, but sometimes, this is not enough. Sometimes genetics reigns triumphant and plagues us with those things we have tried so hard to combat. However, if your medical provider is aware of the history of your family, he may already know to keep watch for potential problems, which may help in early detection.
It is always important to be educated when it comes to your health. Don't take it for granted, and don't just sit back and let those things you are pre-disposed to creep up on you. Take the information that you have and run with it, use it as a tool for your overall health. Your body will thank you and your children will too.
